comScore: Android, iOS Gains Smartphone Market Share, Everyone Else Loses
All the other major mobile platforms moved in the opposite direction:
- Research In Motion: 10.7 percent (down 1.6 percent)
- Microsoft: 3.8 percent (down 0.1 percent)
- Symbian: 0.9 percent (down 0.5 percent)
As for the top OEMs, Samsung is the biggest beneficiary of Android's success and leads the pack with a 25.6 percent share. That's actually down nearly half a percentage point from the previous three-month period, but still ahead of LG at 18.8 percent, Apple at 15.4 percent, Motorola at 11.7 percent, and HTC at 6.4 percent.
comScore also took at look at mobile content usage and discovered that text messaging is the most popular activity, with three quarters of smartphone users sending and receiving messages. Around half of all smartphone users download apps and use a browser, and surprisingly, less than a third -- 27.6 percent -- listen to music on their mobile phone.
