Comscore Data Shows Apple Dominating U.S. Smartphone Market Ahead Of iPhone 6 Launch

Market research firm comScore just released some new figures detailing smartphone market share in the U.S., and once again, Apple is in the top spot with its highly popular iPhone line. For the three-month period ending in August, Apple held a 42 percent share of the U.S. smartphone sector, up just a teeny-tiny bit from 41.9 percent from the previous quarter.

Meanwhile, Samsung remains a little more than an arm's length away with a 28.9 percent share of the market, up from 27.8 percent in the prior quarter. After Samsung, there's a big dip to third place where LG sits at 6.7 percent, followed by Motorola at 5.4 percent and HTC at 4.5 percent.

iPhone 6 Models

While the iPhone is the singular most popular smartphone family in the U.S., more users prefer Android over iOS. That's evidenced by over half of all mobile users -- 52 percent, down slightly from 52.1 percent sequentially -- running Android, versus iOS being installed on 42 percent of all devices.

There really hasn't been much movement in the mobile OS department, which isn't great news for Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform. For the three-month period ended in August, Microsoft claimed a 3.5 percent stake, up a hair from 3.4 percent in the previous quarter.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see what impact Apple's recently launched iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices have on market share, both in terms of hardware and software.
