Controversial ‘Steve Jobs’ Biopic Bombs At Box Office Despite Solid Rotten Tomatoes Rating
One thing is for certain, Steve Jobs was a complex individual. As the co-founder of Apple, now the most valuable company in the world, it stands to reason that people would want to know more about him and his rise from a budding entrepreneur to billionaire technology icon. Unfortunately for Universal Pictures, its biopic titled "Steve Jobs" isn't generating much interest at the box office.
Even though it's generating mostly favorable reviews from critics, "Steve Jobs" pulled in a paltry $7.3 million during its opening weekend to a national audience. That tally placed it seventh on the list of the highest grossing movies, with the top two spots belonging to "The Martian" ($15.9 million) and "Goosebumps" ($15.5 million).

The film is based on Walter Isaacson's 2011 biography of Steve Jobs and like the book, the film is a controversial portrayal of him, both at work and in his personal life. According to a previous report in The Wall Street Journal, Jobs' widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, repeatedly lobbied to kill the film. It's also been criticized by some Apple insiders who claim the film doesn't accurately portray the man they knew. In an appearance on "The Late Show," Apple CEO Tim Cook said he thought "a lot of people are trying to be opportunistic and I hate this."
Despite the objections and poor performance at the box office, "Steve Jobs" is sitting on an 85 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes, a film review aggregation website.
"It's talky, it has no action scenes, and the central character isn't easy to like. But darned if 'Steve Jobs' isn't one of the year's best films," Linda Cook wrote in a review for the Quad City Times. Her sentiment was echoed by A.O. Scott of The New York Times, who called it a "rich and potent" biopic, adding that "it is a formally audacious, intellectually energized entertainment."
