Dell "In Talks" With Google To Create Chrome OS Notebooks
Google is rarely shy about sharing their intentions with the world. They're pretty proud of the wild things they dream up during their 20% time, and they have no issues publishing details on halfway finished projects or things that many would consider "vaporware." Chrome OS is proof of that; to date, we have no actual piece of software nor shipping product to go by, and even though it was originally announced many months ago, the entire world still believes it's coming one day.
As does Dell. A recent Reuters report notes that Dell is "in talks with Google over the use of the Chrome operating system on its laptops," with a top company executive being the source. Amit Midha, Dell's president for Greater China and South Asia told Reuters in an interview: "We have to have a point of view on the industry and technology direction two years, three years down the road, so we continuously work with Google on this. There are going to be unique innovations coming up in the marketplace in two, three years, with a new form of computing, we want to be on that forefront ... So with Chrome or Android or anything like that we want to be one of the leaders."
At last check, Google OS was on track for a "late Fall" release, and it's no real surprise to hear that Dell wishes to be one of the company's first major partners. We suspect that many other major PC vendors are also in talks with Google behind the scenes, and once a new Inspiron Mini with Chrome OS is produced, we have all ideas that the flood of other netbooks with the same OS will begin shortly after.
