App download metrics from Sensor Tower are in for Q4 2019, and they show a big win for Disney's entry into the crowded streaming arena. The data shows that Disney+ was the top downloaded app in the United States. Disney can thank the popularity of "The Mandalorian" along with all the Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and back catalog of Disney content for much of its success. As Disney geared up for the launch of its app, it pulled all of its content off other streaming services such as Netflix.

Disney+ was far and away the top downloaded app in the United States, followed by TicTok, Messenger, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Instagram, Amazon, Snapchat, and Spotify to round out the top 10. On the chart for global downloads, Disney+ took the number nine spot for downloads in the App Store.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Disney+ topping the app download charts in the United States is that the app didn't launch until November 12, which was about halfway through the quarter. Disney+ made up 34% of total streaming video-on-demand downloads for the quarter and surpassed 30 million downloads in the United States alone. According to the Sensor Tower data, Disney+ grossed over $50 million in its first 30 days of availability. That's better than HBO Now's best-ever month, including the spike seen for the final season of "Game of Thrones."

One big question remains for Disney+, and that is how much new original content it will be adding. As it stands now, "The Mandalorian" is one of the few original programs that isn't geared specifically towards children. The numbers for Q1 2020 will be interesting to see, and we'd also like to see how many subscribers stay beyond the first three months. Verizon also helped Disney+ earn its top download ranking after giving a free year of service to all unlimited wireless customers.
