We all know that Samsung makes some of the most gorgeous displays in the smartphone world. The South Korean electronics giant has long been praised for its Super AMOLED displays, and those accolades continue with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

There are some notable physical changes to the display this time around, with Samsung going with an 18.5:9 screen ratio, a nearly bezel-less design, and Gorilla Glass 5 to protect the display from damage. Sporting a resolution of 2960x1440 and peak brightness in excess of 1,000 nits, the Galaxy S8’s display can now represent 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut and it becomes the first smartphone to gain UHD Alliance for Mobile HDR Premium certification.

Compared to the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S8 has better viewing angles, higher screen brightness and improved color accuracy according to DisplayMate. The image processor and personalized auto brightness control have also been enhanced, along with an Always-On Display that is now controlled in software instead of by a separate app.

After running the Galaxy S8 through a battery of tests, DisplayMate President Dr. Raymond M. Soneira was confident enough to state that this is the absolute best display in the smartphone sector to date. It was noted that the Galaxy S8 either matched of exceeded previous high watermarks in the following categories:

  • Largest Native Color Gamut (113% DCI-P3 and 142% sRGB / Rec.709)
  • Highest Peak Brightness (1,020 nits).
  • Highest Contrast Rating in Ambient Light (227).
  • Highest (infinite) Contrast Ratio.
  • Smallest Brightness Variation with Viewing Angle (29 percent).

“It has many major and important state-of-the-art display performance enhancements, features and functions, with mobile OLED display technology now advancing faster than ever,” said Dr. Soneira. “The Galaxy S8 is the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever lab tested. So the Galaxy S8 becomes the Best Performing Smartphone Display, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.”

DisplayMate doesn’t hand out A+ ratings too often, so this is a high achievement for Samsung with the Galaxy S8. “What is particularly significant and impressive is that Samsung has been systematically improving OLED display performance with every Galaxy generation since 2010, when we started tracking OLED displays,” added Dr. Soneira.

Although we’ve gotten some hands-on time with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, we can’t wait to give our readers a more thorough examination of all aspects of the flagship smartphones. Stay Tuned!
