Oh Hell, Doom Eternal Will Not Be Launching This Year After All

Doom Eternal
Slaying demons in id Software's upcoming Doom Eternal game will have to wait a little bit longer than planned. Originally announced for a November 22, 2019 release when it was revealed at E3 earlier this year, id Software today announced it is delaying Doom Eternal a few months to add more "speed and polish."

"To make sure we're delivering the best experience—for Doom Eternal to live up to our standards for speed and polish—we've made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020. We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that Doom Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait," id Software said.

If nothing else, Doom Eternal is shaping up to deliver plenty of gory, as demonstrated in the official E3 story trailer. Check it out...

There will be plenty of enemies and weapons at the Doom Slayer's disposal, including a Meat Hook accessory for the Super Shotgun—it slingshots the player towards and enemy and also functions as a grappling hook for navigating the environment.

Doom Eternal is set to launch on Windows PCs, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia. We have to wonder if the delay is somehow related to Stadia, though that is only speculation on our part (Stadia goes live in November).

As for the Switch, Doom Eternal will launch on that platform sometime after the rest, with id Software saying it will announced a launch date in the future.

Perhaps as a bit of an olive branch (not that it's really necessary), id Software said Doom 64 will also be available on Windows PCs, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, in addition to the Switch where it was originally set to arrive. In addition, Doom 64 is now included as a pre-order bonus for Doom Eternal on all platforms, and will launch at the same time.
