Bethesda Announces DOOM VFR For PlayStation 4 VR And HTC Vive

2016's DOOM pulled off what to some seemed impossible: it proved that series reboots can be amazing. The game was well-received on every platform it was released on, so it's no surprise that Bethesda didn't want to waste too much time coughing up another iteration. For VR fans, this latest one is going to taste oh-so-sweet.

DOOM VFR is a standalone game, rather than an add-on for last year's release. Fortunately, it's not going to carry the cost of a brand-new game, with the preorder priced at $29.99 USD. We're not quite sure what VFR stands for, but if we had to guess, it could be "Virtual F***ing Reality", in the same vein of BFG (Big F***ing Gun), which heralds from the original DOOM.

In DOOM VFR, everyone in UAC's Martian research facility has been wiped out. Except you, of course - but that's something that swiftly changes. Ultimately, you'll lose your body, but your brain will live on, digitally. You in effect become portable AI, able to take over more than just a body, including robots and some devices littered around the UAC.

A couple of neat abilities exist in VFR that should suit a VR environment quite well, including the ability to jet-strafe and also teleport. It's not hard to imagine just how exhilarating a game like this can be, and in some ways, it almost seems overdue.

If you're at all skeptical, DOOM game director Marty Stratton has a few words to share: "Since the hallmark of any DOOM game is combat, we’ve made it our top priority to ensure moving, shooting and killing demons with overwhelming force in virtual reality is as brutal and rewarding as it is in the DOOM experience that fans have been enjoying for the past year."

DOOM VFR is set to become available later this year, with no more specific information given beyond "Q4". Fortunately, it'll be available for both the PS4 and PC (via Vive).
