Musk Claims Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor Performance Edition Does 0 to 60 In 3.5 Seconds
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is famous for sharing details of coming vehicles on Twitter, and he has been doing just that this weekend with some bean-spilling on the company's forthcoming dual motor AWD Model 3 EV. Musk said that Tesla is hard at work on the Model 3 dual motor all-wheel drive and performance versions of the vehicle. He claims that the car's "driving feel is amazing" and offered up some release info and configuration details.
Musk did directly answer one poster who wanted more details on specifics of the front and rear motors, Musk wrote, "AC induction front & switched reluctance, partial permanent magnet rear. Silicon Carbide inverters in both. Performance drive units are lot sorted for highest sigma output & get double the burn-in."
Working on Model 3 dual motor all-wheel drive & performance versions. Driving feel is amazing. Aiming to release config late tonight.

As for pricing, Musk tweeted that the cost of the normal dual motor AWD option is $5,000 and the range of the car will be 310 miles. Musk says that the dual motor AWD option will deliver a 0-60 MPH time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 140 MPH. Those specs are presumably for the standard dual motor version, not the performance flavor, but wait, there's more...
Cost of normal dual motor AWD option is $5k. Range is also 310 miles. Takes 0-60mph to 4.5 sec & top speed to 140 mph.

Musk also says that the dual motor setup will make the car safer. With one motor in the front and one in the rear, the car can drive on either of the motors alone. That means if one breaks down, the car can keep driving rather than stranding the owner.
Tesla dual motor means there is a motor in front & a motor in rear. One is optimized for power & one for range. Car drives fine even if a motor breaks down. Helps ensure you make it to your destination & don’t get stuck on side of road in potentially unsafe conditions.

Delivery date for the dual motor Model 3 will depend on when you place your order, initial deliveries will start July 3 says Musk. Buyers who opt for the performance version of the Model 3 will pay about $78,000. He says that it's about the same as a BMW M3, but it will be 15% quicker and have better handling. Musk goes so far as to say the performance version, "Will beat anything in its class on the track." Musk also dropped performance numbers for the Model 3 dual motor performance flavor, and it's claimed to hit a 0 to 60 MPH time of just 3.5 seconds and a 155 MPH top speed, with the same 310-mile range.

3.5 sec 0-60mph
155 mph Top Speed
310 mile Range
As for style, the dual motor AWD version will get a carbon fiber spoiler, 20-inch performance wheels, and a black and white interior.
Cost of all options, wheels, paint, etc is included (apart from Autopilot). Cost is $78k. About same as BMW M3, but 15% quicker & with better handling. Will beat anything in its class on the track.

Musk says that when that black and white interior rolls out, it will be available only on the performance version of the car due to limited parts availability, but a broader roll-out of that interior color will happen. This all sounds great; now if Tesla can just hit its production goals.
