DVR Functionality Possibly Coming To Xbox One Later In 2015
Game consoles sure have evolved over the years. My earliest console was the Atari 2600, a comparatively simple machine to today's game systems with even simpler controls -- a joystick and a single red button. That's all you needed to play titles like Pitfall and Asteroids. Now we have consoles that not only play games, but purport to be in charge of the entire living room experience. That's fine and dandy, and while I love my Xbox One (second to my gaming PC, of course), it's missing one key function -- the ability to record video.
Home consumers have been recording live TV on a mass scale since the advent of the VCR, so this isn't groundbreaking territory we're talking about here. And if current generation consoles want to dominate the living room experience, DVR capabilities are kind of a prerequisite, don't you think? Well, the good news is, Microsoft might be adding DVR functions to the Xbox One.
In an article reporting on the death of Media Center once Windows 10 arrives, Windows guru Paul Thurrott made an interesting comment as an aside.
"Of course, many Media Center fans actually use the product to record and watch TV shows via Media Center PCs in the living room. Microsoft’s solution for this need will apparently be the Xbox One, though the console currently only provides live TV watching, but not recording. My sources tell me that will change, and most probably this year, to include TV recording," Thurrott says.
Microsoft hasn't made any kind official announcement about adding DVR capabilities to the Xbox One, nor has there been much in the way of leaked information on the topic. However, Thurrott has proven a fairly reliable and credible source of Microsoft news.
Plus, it just makes sense, given that Microsoft wants the Xbox One to be the at the center of your living room entertainment needs, whether it's to play games, listen to music, watch television, or stream movies.
