EarthLink to Offer Customers 4G Through Clearwire

If you’re surprised that EarthLink is still a thing, you’re not alone, but the ISP is apparently very much alive and kicking. Today, the company announced that it will offer its customers fixed and mobile broadband service via Clearwire’s 4G WiMAX network.

The new capabilities will be available starting in early 2013, and will initially be aimed at in-home use with an eye toward expanding into mobile devices and small businesses.

"Clearwire's 4G network is a great extension to EarthLink's business, enabling them to add 4G fixed and mobile data plans to their diverse service portfolio,” said Clearwire SVP of strategic partnerships and wholesale Don Stroberg. “We're thrilled to continue building momentum for our wholesale 4G business as the premier wholesale provider of 4G capacity to carriers, ISPs and other service providers in the U.S."

Clearwire is also working on a next-generation 4G LTE network that will be overlaid onto its existing WiMAX network. When it’s ready for primetime, EarthLink will be able to offer it to its customers, as well.
