Eurocom's Panther 4.0 Uses Ultrabooks as Chew Toys
The current trend in laptops is towards smaller, slimmer, and lighter devices, hence why Intel gave birth to the Ultrabook form factor. But if you think anything less than a full-fledged desktop replacement is for mobile wimps, Eurocom has a new system that might be right up your alley. It's the Panther 4.0, a beast of a system built around Intel's X79 chipset with Sandy Bridge-E platform.
Eurocom's Panther 4.0 is a mobile workstation or a bad mutha-fragger, depending on how you configure it. The only thing slightly modest on it is the 17.3-inch display instead of going all out with an 18-inch LCD. Otherwise, the Panther 4.0 breaks out of its cage with up to an Intel Core i7 3960X Extreme processor clocked at 3.3GHz; up to 64GB of DDR3-1333/1600/1866 memory via four memory sockets; Nvidia GTX 580M or 560M (SLI optional), Quadro 5010M, 4000M, and 3000M options for the professional crowd, or Radeon HD 6990M or 6970M (CrossFireX optional); up to 4TB of storage via four physical 2.5-inch drive bays with RAID 0/1/5/10 support; and a DVD or Blu-ray burner.
It has everything else you'd expect from a modern laptop as well, such as SuperSpeed USB 3.0 support, Wireless-N connectivity, HDMI output, Bluetooth, and the list goes on. There's even a UEFI BIOS running the show on this thing.
""It's a workstation-caliber PC complete with Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) in a notebook form factor," said Mark Bialic, President of Eurocom. "It may be large, but this is one extremely fast notebook that replaces desktop based workstation with over 1 hour of built-in UPS battery."
As you would expect, the Panther 4.0 packs a bit of heft, measuring 16.76 inches x 11.44 inches x 2.31 inches and weighing 12.1 pounds. This is, after all, a desktop replacement with attitude.
Eurocom's Panther 4.0 will ship on March 15, 2012. No word yet on price.
