Over the weekend, we reported on a five-alarm issue involving certain NVIDIA GeForce 10-Series graphics cards from EVGA. Customers of affected cards have witnessed intermittent screen anomalies with their cards, which foreshadows impending doom. Others have witnessed their cards go up in flames, with the voltage regulator module (VRM) overheating due to improper cooling.

Testing has shown that in some cases, parts of the PCB on affected cards has reached upwards of 107C. After issuing an initial statement on the matter when the first reports starting spreading, EVGA is back now with further information on its GeForce 10 Series graphics cards that use the ACX 3.0 cooler.

“On ACX 3.0, EVGA focused on GPU temperature and the lowest acoustic levels possible. Running Furmark, the GPU is around 70C +/- and the fan speed is running approximately 30% duty cycle or lower,” writes EVGA. “However, during recent testing, the thermal temperature of the PWM and memory, in extreme circumstances, was marginally within spec and needed to be addressed.”

To remedy the problem at hand, EVGA is issuing a new VBIOS update that will adjust the fan speed curve to ensure that all components on its cards with ACX 3.0 receive proper cooling at all times. That might mean higher fan speeds, and thus higher acoustic levels, but it sure beats the hell out of having a fried card on your hands.

EVGA says that this update, which will be made available as a free download over the next few days, will “[resolve] the potential thermal issues that have been reported, and ensures the card maintains safe operating temperatures.” While the VBIOS update is being billed as a cure-all for the flare ups, EVGA is also providing free thermal pads for those that want the peace of mind that all precautions are being taken to keep their expensive GeForce 10 Series cards safe. The thermal pads can be obtained by visiting the following EVGA site.

It should be noted that all EVGA cards shipping as of today have the new VBIOS installed. In addition, the VBIOS update does not apply to Founders Edition, Blower type, HYBRID, or HYDRO COPPER cards. And in case you were wondering, if your card was damaged at all due to higher than expected operating temperatures, EVGA will replace your card under warranty.
