Facebook Preps Its Own Virtual Reality Apps For Oculus Rift

Beyoncé is going to be an Oculus Rift modder. So will you and everyone else who eventually dons the virtual reality headset, or so that's the future Facebook envisions for its $2 billion venture. Facebook Chief Product Officer Chris Cox talked a bit about his company's vision for Oculus Rift at the Code/Media conference, and it involve apps that will allow you to create expanded experiences.

Cox talked about some of the film demos that are available on Oculus Rift, like riding in a Blue Angel fighter jet.

"You realize, when you’re in it, that you’re looking at the future, and it’s going to be awesome," Cox said. "When you’re in Facebook, you’re just sending around these bits of experience — a photo, a video, a thought"

Cox explained how VR takes the general Facebook experience further. Instead of sharing photos and videos, VR will allow you to share a "fuller picture." When asked if people will be able to make VR content, he responded "Totally. You'll do it, Beyoncé  will do it."

He didn't go into detail on how users will create content on VR, though he did say that Facebook is working on apps for the Oculus Rift. It's through those apps that the magic will happen, though it's not going to be Facebook in the VR space, not all of them, anyway.

You have plenty of time to let your imagine run wild with the possibilities. Though Cox is excited about where Oculus VR is headed, he readily admits that it will likely be a long time before these headsets enter the mainstream market.
