Fallout 76 Won't Have Multiplayer Cross-Play, And We Can Blame Sony For This Travesty

Sony sure does know how to ruin a good party. As if infuriating scores of Fortnite fans by blocking cross-play and cross-progression with the PlayStation 4 and other competing consoles (i.e. Xbox One and Nintendo Switch) wasn't enough, we're now learning that Sony is also the reason why cross-play won't be enabled on Bethesda's upcoming Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 was announced earlier this month at E3, and gamers are eagerly awaiting its November 14th release. It will be the first game in the long-running franchise that is focused on online play, but it won't support cross-play between the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC -- the three platforms that the game will support at launch. In fact, it appears that Sony is actually forbidding this from happening according to Todd Howard, who serves as the director and executive producer for Bethesda Game Studios.

Howard was directly asked about Fallout 76 cross-play by German publication Gamestar.de, and frankly responded, "We would love to do that, but right now that's not possible." Howard went on to add, "Sony isn't being as helpful as we want them to be."

Really, Sony? At this point, many gamers are simply throwing their hands up in frustration as the company doesn't appear to want to change its ways in order to preserve the sales dominance of the PlayStation 4 platform. However, Sony's stubbornness is coming at a great cost to the overall gaming community. Although Microsoft and Nintendo are rivals in the console game arena, the companies have no beef when it comes to allowing cross-play and cross-progression with games like Fortnite and Minecraft.

For its part, Sony appears to be willing to relent a little with respect to Fortnite. "We're hearing it. We're looking at a lot of the possibilities," said Shawn Layden, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America earlier this week. "You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

However, it seems as though Layden's comments are in reference to cross-progression between consoles rather than full cross-play compatibility.
