First Gears of War 4 Trailer Is A Disturbed Ode To Sound of Silence

“Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again.” Those are the opening lines to the classic Simon & Garfunkel song “Sound of Silence,” and it’s those same words that underscore the eerily haunting debut trailer for the latest entry in the Gears of Wars franchise, Gears of War 4.

This cover of "Sound of Silence," performed by the band Disturbed, is an amazing backdrop for an emotional look back at the blissful childhood of new protagonist J.D. Fenix. The happier moments are interlaced with present [game] day mayhem featuring an older, more hardened Fenix on the battlefield 25 years after the events in Gears of War 3.

“It gave me the chills,” said Disturbed lead singer David Draiman when talking about the trailer in a recent interview. “It seemed very, very appropriate for the storyline, for what the main character is going through, and it seems to set the stage perfectly.

“It seemed it was a marriage that was meant to be.”

It should be noted that the original version of the Simon & Garfunkel song has resurfaced on the Billboard Top 100 thanks primarily to the existence of a hilarious viral video starring Ben Affleck. The song plays in the background as a sad Affleck ponder this existence (or perhaps his part in the spectacular flop that was Daredevil) while his co-star Henry Cavill answers a question regarding horrible reviews for Batman v Superman.

If the trailer isn’t enough to satisfy for your cravings for the October 11th release of Gears of War 4, those that have played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will have early access to the beta from April 18th through the 24th. An open beta for all Xbox Live Gold members runs from April 25th through May 1st.
