Ford Rolls Out Next Gen Collision Avoidance And Hands-Free Parking Assistance Tech
Ford just unveiled its next generation driver assistance technologies for “stress-free parking, collision avoidance, [and] wrong way driving," which should go a long way towards making driving even more convenient and safer for all. Scott Lindstrom, manager for driver-assist and active safety at Ford, remarked, “Driver-assist technologies help us all be better drivers because they enhance our ability to see and sense the road around us.
"Ford’s investment in research and development is paying off by accelerating innovation to expand our portfolio of driver-assist technologies that deliver functionality and performance that customers will value.”
So what is included in Ford’s latest driver assist technologies suite? First, Ford has incorporated cross-traffic alerts with braking technology. The vehicle will now warn drivers if a person or object is passing behind the car, and will automatically brake if the driver does not respond. Second, a rear wide-view camera will enable drivers to better see what's behind them. Enhanced active parking assist will also help drivers parallel and perpendicular park. Next, Ford has included evasive steering assist to help drivers avoid stopped or slower vehicles. Last, the wrong-way alert technology uses a windshield-mounted camera and information from the car’s navigation system to let drivers know if they are driving against traffic.
Ford is also working on several technologies right now that are not yet available. One technology is traffic jam assist which will help vehicles to stay centered in their lane. Another is spot lighting, which is supposed to use an infrared camera to detect pedestrians, cyclists, and animals. Ford researchers are also working to improve front lighting systems by widening the headlight beams.
Ford is working on adding the latest next generation technologies to its vehicles within two years. However, the company's Escape, Taurus, F-150, Fusion and Edge already boast a number of driver-assist technologies either as standard or optional equipment.
