Ford Teases 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 Packing Over 700 Horsepower

Ford has been showing off some very cool cars and trucks at the Detroit Auto Show for the past few days. The company has unveiled the new Ranger truck and announced the return of the 2019 Mustang Bulllitt. As cool as that Mustang Bullitt was packing its 475hp engine under hood, if you want a pony car with more power, Ford will soon have the perfect response.

The automaker has teased the return of the Shelby GT500, and the car will sit at the top of the range for Mustang fans to aspire to own. Right below the GT500 will be the GT350, and there are major differences in the two Shelby cars and they have different markets they aim for. The GT500 will pack over 700hp according to Ford giving it enough firepower to combat competition like the Challenger SRT Hellcat.

The GT350 is more of a track day road course weapon. The Shelby GT500 in past iterations has been less of a car meant for carving corners and more of a car meant for dominating the quarter mile. While Ford teased the GT500 in Detroit, it had no car on hand to show off. All Ford really did was confirm that the car is coming and taunt with a few details at the show and via a teaser video (seen below).

History and power figures point to a supercharged V8 engine, something the GT500 has had in previous iterations. The last GT500 was offered in the 2014 model year and it had a 5.8L supercharged V8 making 662hp and 631 lb-ft of torque. The 2014 model claimed a top speed of 202 mph; presumably the new GT500 will be even faster with more power. The GT500 is expected in 2019 as a 2020 model and is being hailed as the most powerful street-legal Ford ever.
