When most people think about the Ford Mustang, they imagine a rear-wheel drive beast powered by a thumping V8 engine. However, in recent years Ford has reintroduced a turbocharged four-cylinder to the lineup and it is by no means a slouch in the performance arena.

Today, Ford has introduced the new 2.3L High Performance Package for the four-banger Mustang. This new package adds an additional 20 horsepower to the already stout 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, bringing its total to 330 horsepower. Torque remains unchanged at 350 lb-ft. To put that in perspective, the 2010 Mustang GT with its 4.6-liter V8 engine produced 315 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to the enhancements under the hood, there are also handling upgrades that come courtesy of the hardware found in the Mustang GT Performance Package. Donor parts include brakes, performance tires and aero improvements. The 19-inch machined aluminum wheels are wrapped with 265/40R Pirelli P Zero Corsa4 summer tires, and a 3.55:1 limited-slip rear axle is part of the package.

The new 2.3L High Performance Package will be available with either a 6-speed Getreg manual or 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford says that this boisterous new Mustang trim will go from a standstill to 60 mph in around 4.5 second, which isn’t bad for a four-cylinder engine. Of course, Mustang owners with a 5.0 under the hood may scoff at your engine with less than half the displacement, but the 2.3L High Performance Package has more than enough power for everyday commutes and even the occasional stoplight drag race.

“It’s not just the horsepower gains over the standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost, it’s the broader torque curve that delivers 90 percent of peak torque between 2,500 and 5,300 rpm, which is 40 percent wider than the base EcoBoost engine,” said Mustang chief engineer Carl Widmann. “Plus, horsepower holds stronger up to the 6,500-rpm redline – enabling more usable power and torque for enthusiasts and weekend autocrossers to enjoy.”

Ford says that the new 2020 Mustang with 2.3L High Performance Package will be available this fall alongside four new colors including Grabber Lime, Iconic Silver, Red Hot Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Twister Orange.
