Latest Fortnite Patch Brings Massive Nintendo Switch Performance Upgrade, Steady Storm LTM

Fortnite
Epic Games continue to feed its cash cow known as Fortnite, the world's most popular battle royale shooter that is free to play but offers in-game purchases. One of the appeals of Fortnite is that it is available on a bunch of different platforms. One of those is the Nintendo Switch, and it just received a big performance boost courtesy of the latest software patch.

The version 5.20 patch contains a "significant GPU optimization," according to the release notes. Specifically, Epic Game's developers moved to the high-end forward renderer that purportedly increases dynamic resolution by 10 percent in expensive scenes. That is a huge bump, and one that we are sure will be appreciated by Switch owners.

Other performance tweaks include:
  • Optimized the way explosives modify buildings to lighten the load on dedicated servers.
  • Building props have more efficient network usage when taking damage.
  • Melee animation trails now use significantly less network traffic.
  • Optimized C4 network usage, the impact sound no longer broadcasts to players outside a certain range. It now only plays for players that are close enough to the impact.
The latest patch also introduced a limited time mode (LTM) called Steady Storm. It features a constantly moving storm that closes in on the island. Players have to stay ahead of the storm while simultaneously taking down opponents to earn a Victory Royale.

There are no safe zone circles in Steady Storm. Players have to keep an eye on the map to predict where the Storm will close in. It does 10 damage per second, and lasts 15 minutes per match. Profile stats and Challenges are both tracking in Steady Storm.

As always, there is a wealth of other changes and improvements introduced in the latest patch, everything from audio enhancements and UI tweaks, to new weapons and a mountain of bug fixes. Hit the link in the via field to view the full release notes.
