Galaxy A7 Promises To Be Samsung's Thinnest Smartphone Yet

Earlier this week, we learned that Samsung is going back to the drawing board with the Galaxy S6. The South Korean electronics manufacturer is looking to learn from mistakes it made with the Galaxy S5, leverage economies of scale by reusing components across its entire smartphone range, and use more premium materials to give the Galaxy S6 a more upscale appearance.

But while the Galaxy S6 is likely to make an appearance sometime during Q1 2015, it looks as though Samsung is cooking up another Galaxy smartphone that should be launching shortly. The Galaxy A7 has made an appearance via China’s TENAA regulatory agency, and will join the existing mid-range Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5.

What makes the Galaxy A7 interesting, however, is the fact that it will be Samsung’s thinnest Galaxy smartphone to date. At 6.3mm, it’s even thinner than the Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy A5 which both measure in at 6.7mm thick. The Galaxy A3 is slightly thicker at 6.9mm.

Other specs for the smartphone include a 5.5” 1080p display, 1.5GHz 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of onboard storage. Camera duties will be handled by a 12MP rear unit and a 5MP unit up front.

The addition of the Galaxy A7 makes for a complete mid-range product family, encompassing 4.5”, 5”, and 5.5” screen sizes. We wouldn’t put it past Samsung to release a 6” A9, but the company has promised to cool its jets with the release of new smartphones in 2015.
