Galaxy Note 6 Could Come Backed By 6GB Of Samsung 10nm LPDDR4 DRAM
Following the successful launch of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung is looking forward to “The Next Big Thing.” For those that like phablets, you’ll be happy to know that Samsung is well on its way towards releasing the Galaxy Note 6, the logical successor to last year’s Galaxy Note 5.
Although we don’t have any confirmed details on the next generation phablet, the word on the street is that it will be among the first smartphones on the planet to ship with 6GB of RAM onboard. It seems as though just yesterday we started seeing Android flagships shipping with 4GB of RAM onboard, but Samsung just recently unveiled its 10nm 6GB LPDDR4 memory for mobile devices.
A larger stash of RAM typically means increased power consumption, but that likely won’t be the case given the 10nm manufacturing process. We weren’t expecting to see 6GB smartphones until next year at the earliest, but it looks as though Samsung could likely prove us wrong when the Galaxy Note 6 launches later this year.
Other specs reportedly on tap include a 5.8-inch QHD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 823 SoC, Adreno 530 GPU, 32GB of internal storage, microSD slot, a 4000 mAh battery, IP68 certification and a USB Type-C connector. That last spec is welcome news for those that were somewhat perplexed by Samsung’s decision include a microUSB port on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The consensus seemed to suggest that Samsung went this route to maintain compatibility with the Gear VR (and sure enough, Samsung did give away the Gear VR headsets to customer that pre-ordered its latest smartphones).
Whatever the case, either Samsung is working on a new version of the Gear VR that uses USB-C connectivity or the company thinks that Gear VR compatibility isn’t of much concern for owners of the productivity-focused Galaxy Note series.
It’s also said that the Galaxy Note 6 will include some type of biometrics recognition other than a fingerprint scanner — in this case, all signs are pointing towards facial recognition technology, as the names Samsung Iris and Samsung Eyeprint have been been floating around in recent days.
