After last year's fiery Galaxy Note 7 disaster, many didn't know whether the "Note" brand was damaged forever or if Samsung would be able to shake off the bad press and move forward. Well, it looks though it’ll take more than battery fires to keep people away, as Samsung just announced that the Galaxy Note 8 has set a new preorder record for the Note family.

According to Samsung, more people preordered the Galaxy Note 8 than any other previous Note launch, including the highly anticipated (at the time) Galaxy Note 7 (although the company didn’t give any concrete sales numbers). Either way, that’s a pretty solid victory for Samsung given the Galaxy Note 7 baggage and the fact that the Galaxy Note 8 has an MSRP of over $900.

“We’re thrilled to see the strong consumer response to the next level Note,” said Tim Baxter, President and CEO for Samsung Electronics North America. “Today’s consumers want to do bigger things in work and life, and Note helps make that possible. We built the Galaxy Note8 for people who desire a device that lets them be productive and allows for self-expression.”

Despite this early success, it remains to be seen if sales will continue to be this strong for the life of the device. Some have even questioned if the Galaxy Note 8 offers a compelling enough advantage over the cheaper Galaxy S8+, with the major differences being a slightly larger 6.3-inch display (versus 6.2 inches), 6GB of RAM (versus 4GB), dual cameras, and the inclusion of the S Pen .

Preorders for the Galaxy Note 8 opened on August 24th, and the device will begin shipping on September 15th. Samsung is offering previous Galaxy Note 7 owners up to $425 off the price of Galaxy Note 8 with an eligible smartphone trade-in and T-Mobile is offering an even sweeter buy-on-get-one-free offer for customers.
