Galaxy S10 Preorders Set Record In US As Samsung Seeks Mobile Dominance
Samsung has rolled out its recently launched Galaxy S10 family to around 70 countries, including the US, Canada, China, and all of Europe, and is planning to offer its newest flagship phones in about 130 markets by the end of the month. Ahead of that rapid expansion, Samsung has seen record preorder tallies in a couple of territories.
Heading into the weekend, Samsung said its Galaxy S10 lineup generated more preorder sales in the UK than any of its previous smartphones, and now it is saying the same for preorders in the US. That is quite the accomplishment, given the company's 10-year history in the smartphone business.
What also makes this impressive is that smartphone growth as a whole has slowed around the globe. Samsung has not been immune to this trend, either—according to recent data by Canalys, Samsung's smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2018 fell by 5 percent, closing out what the market research firm called a "humbling year" for the company.
Part of that decline might have been a temporary stall as consumers waited for the Galaxy S10 to arrive. Anticipation ran high for the Galaxy S10 launch, as there was a near-constant bombardment of leaks beforehand.
Interestingly, the larger (and more expensive) Galaxy S10+ has accounted for 57 percent of sales so far in both the UK and US. As for color preference, buyers in the UK are mostly flocking to the Prism Black models, while buyers in the US are gobbling up the Prism White handsets. Samsung has not provided detailed figures on any of this, though, only percentages.
The Galaxy S10 is a fine phone. It earned an Editor's Choice award in our own evaluation of the Galaxy S10+, based on all around performance and its gorgeous HDR+ display. For anyone in the market for an Android phone, the Galaxy S10 is arguably the best option.
