GameStop Now Selling SIM Cards, Mobile Service
Yep, you read that headline right--GameStop is getting into the mobile service provider business, with its new GameStop Mobile MVNO. The company will sell you a SIM card (you’ll need your own unlocked phone) and set you up with a contract-free service plan while it entices you to snap up some used console game titles.
GameStop is using AT&T’s network and offers up a variety of plan options, all of which include domestic long distance, nationwide coverage (with no roaming), voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting. There are no activation charges, and you keep your service as long as you let GameStop deduct its money every month.
The two highest-prices plans, Smartphone Unlimited and Data Only, both cost $55 a month; the former offers unlimited voice and text with 500MB of data while the latter simply offers 1GB of data and nothing else.
The $45-per-month Unlimited $35-per-month Talk&Text Unlimited offer unlimited talk and text with 100MB and 30 cents/MB, respectively. There’s also a pay-as-you-go plan that charges you 10 cents per minute for voice, 10 cents per text, and $1.50 per MB that costs $20 a month.
It seems a bit odd that GameStop would jump into the mobile market like this, but hey, they need to find a way to stay in business. We won’t be gaming with discs and consoles forever.
