G&D Announces Nano-SIM Card

Just in case a micro-SIM card is too bulky for you, Germany’s Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has announced a nano-SIM card, which is about 30% smaller than the micro-SIM and 60% smaller than a SIM card.

Measuring 12mm x 9mm and roughly 15% thinner than a micro-SIM, the nano-SIM card is designed to allow device manufacturers to build slimmer mobile devices and will also leave more space for components such as batteries or memory.

So long as it clears standardization through the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute), the nano-SIMs will find their way onto new mobile devices as soon as early 2012.

And for those who pine for the little card but are cursed with an older device, G&D says that a universal adapter will be available so the nano-SIM can be used in just about any SIM-ready device.
