Google Assistant Can Now Set Timed Reminders For Your Family And Friends
Not all feature updates have to be groundbreaking or big in scope. I'm reminded of this today with Google announcing a nifty new capability coming to Google Assistant. In short order, Google Assistant users will be able to assign reminders to family members and friends. There are several ways this could come in handy.
"Assignable reminders on the Google Assistant help families and housemates better collaborate and stay organized while at home or on the go. This means you can now create reminders for your partner or roommate to do things like pick up the groceries, pay a recurring bill, walk the dog—or send them a note of encouragement when they need it the most ('Hey Google, remind Mary that she will do great on tomorrow’s exam')," Google states in a blog post.
In addition, Google says assignable reminders will work with specific addresses and landmarks. Let's say you know Billy is going to Disneyland and you want him to snag you a Mickey Mouse shirt when he gets there. He may forget all about your gift because of the excitement of visiting an amusement park. That's where a timed reminder comes into play. For example, "Hey Google, remind Billy to pick up a Mickey Mouse shirt when he gets to Disneyland." Google Assistant will create a reminder that pops up when he gets there.
Setting these types of reminders is easy. The example Google gives is, "Hey Google, remind Greg to take out the trash at 8pm." Greg will then get an appropriate notification on this compatible devices, including his phone, smart display, and smart speaker.
The new feature is not yet available, but will be rolling out over the new few weeks in English on phones, speakers, and smart displays in the US, UK, and Australia. Assignable reminders will also work with the Google Nest Hub Max when it launches later this year.
