Google/Omnisio Turns YouTube Into A Foodfight

Google, the owners YouTube, have purchased web startup Omnisio, a small company that allows users to easily stitch together videos and mash bits of text over the whole thing. It has the potential to make YouTube videos even worse, or oh-so-much better, depending on your point of view.

As you probably guessed, we’re big fans of anything that lets people interact with online video and gives the YouTube community the chance to express themselves in creative ways. New features such as Video Annotations, which allow you to insert comments and information into the video itself, are just one example of how we're beginning to expand what you can do with your videos on the site.

It’s in this spirit that we’re thrilled to announce Google’s purchase of Omnisio, a small California-based startup that’s focused on making online video more useful and collaborative. The Omnisio team has tremendous technical expertise when it comes to advanced video tools and having this kind of talent at YouTube should help us further explore ways to enhance your YouTube experience.

YouTube seems to be doubling down their bet that they are going to prevail in their high profile copyright battles. There's a gray area in Fair Use law that allows people to use some copyrighted material if they add content or editorial commentary, for instance. This widget would probably lead to an explosion of clips on YouTube that are modified versions of things YouTube would normally have to yank off the service over copyright. And here's a grim thought:

What if the comments you see under your typical YouTube video start making their way onto the video instead of festering down under the statistics? Yikes. Kudos to the kids at Omnisio. They launched the product in March of 2008, and they already got their big payday.
