Google Chrome 77 Rolls Out With Tab Sharing And New Dev Tools, Get It Here

Google Chrome
Google continues its steady march forward with the advancement of the world's most popular web browser: Chrome. The company this week launched the latest release with Chrome 77. Chrome 77 is available for all major computing platforms including Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS.

One of the biggest features is the addition of tab sharing, which will allow you to send pages to multiple devices. While you have the ability to browse open tabs on your other signed-in devices, this new feature makes it a bit easier to send over tabs if you want to switch from your desktop to say, your tablet for lounging on the sofa.

The feature can be invoked by clicking/tapping on the menu button and selecting "Share" or you can right clink on a link. From there, you'll see the option to "Send this page" which will allow you to share with any device logged in to your Google account. At this moment, the feature is not yet activated in macOS.

Google has also included new tools to help developers optimize pages for performance, including a new metric that is called "Largest Contentful Paint." Google describes the feature, writing:

Some metrics are only measurable in a lab, while others tell nothing about content that users care about. Largest Contentful Paint attempts to provide more meaningful data by using the largest content element as a proxy for when the main content of the page is likely visible to users.

You can see an example of this in practice in the image above. You can see a full list of changes in Chrome 77 by clicking the following link, while all of the security-related changes can be viewed here. iOS-specific changes with Chrome 77 are as follows:

  • A new language settings page, giving you more control over which languages Chrome offers translations for.
  • You can clear your browsing data from a specific range of time, like the past hour or past day.
  • Omnibox suggestions are easier to read with added thumbnails and icons.
  • Easily close tabs that are maliciously showing JavaScript dialogues.
