Google Issues Pixel 2 XL Update That Adds Three Color Profiles And Fights OLED Burn-In
Google has been addressing several issues that have surfaced with its Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2 smartphones since their introduction. One of the issues with the larger XL device was that some complained that the colors on screen weren't as vibrant as they were on other devices with similar screens. Google came back and stated that it had created the phone to offer more natural colors, but admitted that some prefer the more vivid hues.
A new update has been issued that adds three color profiles, a big upgrade to the single "vivid colors" profile that the smartphone originally shipped with. The new profiles include "boosted", "natural", and "saturated." That boosted setting is a replacement for vivid colors of yore.
The software update also adds another tweak to combat the screen burn-in issue the Pixel 2 XL has been experiencing. The new feature aims at reducing burn-in by adding in a small reduction to maximum brightness and a navigation bar that fades out after a period of inactivity. Google has already stated that burn-in is normal, but it did extend the warranty to two years. Reports of screen burn-in first surfaced in late October.
For users of the smaller Pixel 2 smartphone, the update includes a fix for the clicking noise plaguing some devices. The high-pitched whining sound was also reportedly affecting some Pixel 2 XL devices as well. Google never really said what caused that high-pitched whining noise or the clicking. However, early on reports indicated that disabling NFC fixed the issue. Google has promised a security patch in December that will bring with it more enhancements for the devices.
Interestingly, a report recently surfaced that claims the HTC U11 Plus was originally intended to be the Pixel 2 XL. The U11 Plus and the Pixel 2 XL have very similar features though the HTC device uses an LCD rather than OLED. With all the display issues Pixel 2 XL owners are fighting right now, an LCD would probably be welcome by many users.
