Google Launches $999 Pixelbook, Wireless Pixel Buds Earphones And Google Clips AI Camera
Yesterday a leak turned up that claimed to tell what specs the Google Pixelbook was going to pack into its chassis. Today the device has gone official and we know exactly what hardware is used and how much the Pixelbook will cost.
As the rumor yesterday claimed, there are three storage capacities available including a 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB NVMe SSDs. You can get the machine with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and processors are 7th Generation Intel Core parts.
The machine runs Chrome OS and has a 12.3-inch 2400x1600 LCD with a Gorilla Glass covering. Internal audio is handled by dual speakers and there are four mics. The rumor yesterday pegged a Core i5 as the only processor option, but we do know now that a Core i7 is available.
The keyboard is backlit and the integrated webcam is a 720p unit. A TPM chip is integrated for security along with a 3-axis gyroscope and a magnetometer. Two USB-C ports are integrated along with a 3.5mm headphone port. The Google Assistant is integrated and the machine has a display that can rotate around for different modes of use. The Pixelbook is 10.3mm thick and has a battery promising 10 hours of use per charge.
The new Daydream View was unveiled after a leak back in September showed us colors and the new design for the VR headset. The Daydream View promises a wider field of view than the predecessor and more comfort with new materials covering the headset and an adjustable elastic strap. Colors include Fog, Coral, and Charcoal. The following popular devices are Daydream ready Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ Galaxy Note 8, Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z2 among others.
The controller links to the smartphone via Bluetooth LE and charges via a USB-C port. The updated Daydream View sells for $99.
Google also unveiled the Pixel Buds, which is a set of wireless earbuds for audio fans. The earbuds have some cool features including integrated Google Translate.
The internal rechargeable battery is good for five hours of listening per charge. The Pixel Buds charging case has its own battery with enough power to recharge your Pixel Buds for 24 hours of use. The Pixel Buds are controllable with gestures like swipes and taps, and will work with iOS 10.0+ or Andorid 5.0+. However, for Google Assistant you need Android 6.0 or higher. They come in Just Black, Clearly White, and Kinda Blue priced at $159.
Google Clips is a small camera that is meant to take with you wherever you go. Clips is meant to recognize good framing, lightning, and expression and will capture images automatically. It can capture motion photos lasting several seconds without audio. It has recognition tech inside to identify familiar faces and identify pets.
Clips has a 130-degree field of view and can record at 15 fps. Internal storage is 16GB, the camera weighs only 60.5 grams and it can take photos for up to three hours per charge. It has a manual shutter button and can transfer photos directly to you phone with Wi-Fi Direct. Google Clips sells for $249 and you need a compatible smartphone to use the Google Clips app.
