GoPro Fusion Spherical 360 Degree VR 5.2K Camera Launching 2H 2017

It is time to take your GoPro footage to the next level. The company just announced the pilot program for Fusion, its new spherical 360 Degree VR 5.2K camera.

GoPro founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman remarked, “Fusion is just that, the ability to capture every angle simultaneously…as though you had six GoPro cameras fused into one. Whether filming for VR or traditional fixed-perspective content, Fusion represents the state-of-the-art in versatile spherical capture.”

Fusion is particularly notable for its “OverCapture” feature that is enabled by its 5.2K resolution. Users will be able to capture non-VR videos and photos in HD from spherical angles. This device is therefore ideal for creators of both VR and non-VR content. Fusion will also be compatible with a number of existing GoPro mounts and handheld devices.

The Fusion may be what GoPro needs to get out of its current slump. Despite the release of the 360° VR Six Camera Omni this past August, the company experienced a loss of $104 million for the third quarter of 2016. The company had hoped that its Karma Drone would turn those frowns upside down. Unfortunately, GoPro was forced to recall 2500 units due to a loss of power during flight.

GoPro remained optimistic in spite of the recall and falling profits. Woodman noted, “"Looking forward to 2017, we expect to return to profitability, driven by the strength of our new products, double digit revenue growth and annual operating expenses of approximately $650 million.”

GoPro will be working with a number of brands, agencies, and content professionals in order to improve the Fusion experience. The company is currently planning for a limited commercial release by the end of 2017 and will release pricing and more specifications at that time.
