Hackers Exploit Apple iCloud Activation Lock Allowing Restoration Of Stolen iPhones
Life just got a little easier for iPhone thieves, though technically that's not the intended purpose of a new tool that helps iDevice owners bypass Apple's iCloud activation lock. Officially -- and we're not sure if that comes with a *wink* *wink* or if the developers are being sincere -- a tool called "doulCi" is supposed to restore locked iDevices if, say, you've forgotten your Apple ID and password.
"doulCi is the world's first Alternative iCloud Server, and the world’s first iCloud Activation Bypass. doulCi will bypass and activate your iDevice for you when you are stuck at the Apple activation menu. So, why would you use it? For example, if you have forgotten your Apple ID and password or no longer have access to your old iTunes email account then its impossible to regain control of your Apple Product!! doulCi is the solution that will enable you to can regain permanent access," the developers explain.
The tool involves adding a line to your hosts file to direct your PC to look for doulCi's server rather than Apple's activation server. Then it's just a matter of plugging your iPhone into a USB port and going through the activation process as normal -- within a few seconds, you'll have a working device again. Well, sort of.
Hacker and Evad3rs team member "MuscleNerd" notes on Twitter that this hack "only turns iPhones into iPods (no cell)" and that it doesn't stick when restoring the device. However, the tool's developers -- iScythe and AquaXetine -- say a carrier fix is forthcoming, details of which they plan to release sometime tonight.
