It is incredibly easy to make GIFs on Facebook. Users need to simply go to their Facebook camera and select the GIF option on the top of their screen. They will then be able to customize their GIF with various effects and frames. The GIFs are a few seconds long and can be added to Facebook stories, posted on a person’s profile, or saved to their device.
Facebook recently added a GIF comment button in honor of the format’s 30th anniversary. The button allows users to search and select GIFs from a variety of services such as Giphy and Tenor and then post them in the comments sections. On desktop browsers, the GIF button also displays trending GIFs.
The social-networking service has been relatively slow to embrace GIFs. Facebook was initially concerned about the visual impact GIFs would have on the News Feed. They introduced GIF support two years ago, however, users had to enter the URL of a different GIF host. Facebook finally added native support for GIFs at the beginning of 2016 and was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Thirteen billion GIFs were sent on Messenger in 2016 alone.
Facebook has been working tirelessly to keep up with competitors like Snapchat and Instagram. They introduced a new camera in March that boasts “dozens of effects like masks, frames and interactive filters that you can apply to your photos and videos”. Facebook also introduced their Stories feature around the same time they updated their camera. Like Snapchat and Instagram, users are able to share a collection of videos and photos that will disappear after 24 hours. GIFs will hopefully spice up these now commonplace capabilities
At the moment the latest GIFs feature seems limited to a few iOS devices. It is likely that this update will be rolled out over the next couple of weeks.
