Hitachi Announces Two G-Technology Drives Ahead of CES
Hitachi is planning to display a pair of new hard drives at CES, the 1TB Travelstar 5K1000 and the 4TB Deskstar 7K4000. Both will be in the company’s G-Technology family, which is a line of products designed exclusively for Apple products.
The 2.5-inch Travelstar 5K1000 features a 6Gbps SATA interface and will be wrapped in a G-DRIVE mobile or G-DRIVE mobile USB portable chassis. The former features USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 connectivity, and the latter offers USB 2.0. The two variations on the 1TB Travelstar 5K1000 are bus-powered, Time Machine-ready, and will ship in the first quarter of 2012. The G-DRIVE mobile USB and G-DRIVE mobile will cost $179.99 and $199.99, respectively.

The 7200RPM, 4TB Deskstar 7K4000, meanwhile, will be the basis for Hitachi’s G-RAID and G-DRIVE solutions. The drive features 6Gbps SATA and a 64MB cache buffer, and the all-aluminum drive enclosures offer 3Gbps eSATA, FireWire 800/400, and USB 2.0 connectivity. Both are configured for Mac OS X and Time Machine out of the box, although they can easily be configured for use with Windows-based systems.
The 4TB Deskstar 7K4000-based G-DRIVE will start at $449.99, and the G-RAID--which boasts a pair of the 4TB drives--will cost $899.99. Both will ship in the first quarter of 2012.
