Hands-On With The Honor 6X: Dual Cameras And 5.5-inch 1080p Display For $250 Unlocked
Such is the case with the new Honor 6X, which manages to cram in an incredibly amount of functionality for an amazingly low $250 price tag unlocked (we’ll get to that in a moment). What you’ll receive is a 5.5-inch 1080p display and a swanky aluminum unibody frame that weighs 5.71 ounces and measures just 8.2mm thick.
Powering the device is Huawei’s custom Kirin 655 octa-core processor. The SoC features four high-performance cores that are clocked at 2.1GHz, which are joined by four high-efficiency cores that are clocked at 1.7GHz. The Kirin 655 isn’t going to give Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 a run for the money when it comes to sheer processing power, but it does offer respectable performance for a budget device, and includes 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
But where Huawei really aims to impress is with the Honor 6X’s camera system, as it features two rear-facing cameras. The primary camera has a 12MP image sensor that shoots in color, while a secondary 2MP camera shoots only in monochrome. The Honor 6X’s software then combines the data from both sensors to produce more vibrant and sharper images, especially in low-light conditions.
The dual-camera system also allows you to refocus the image (after it is taken) and permits the application of nifty bokeh effects. There are also a number of custom filters to play around with if that’s your thing. For those that care about front-facing “selfie” cameras, there’s an 8MP unit with a 77-degree wide-angle lens.
Other features of the Honor 6X include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, 3,340 mAh battery and fast charging support. Interestingly, the Honor 6X recharges via a microUSB port instead of the increasingly popular USB-C interface. Perhaps that’s a result of its bargain basement pricing, but it’s something to consider if you’ve already invested in USB-C gear. The smartphone will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow preinstalled, but Huawei plans to release an Android 7.0 Nougat update during Q1 2017.
The Honor 6X will be available in grey, gold or silver starting this month in the U.S. for $249. However, Huawei will have four “Flash Sales” during the month of January which will see that price fall to an amazing $200 via its website. We should note that there will be a second variant of the phone with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for $299, but it will not be available in the U.S.
