Here’s How To Install AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper Processor On An X399 Motherboard
First of all, we have to commend MSI on the positively “chill” music that they used for this video. I could totally listen to this all day while on hold on the phone, or in an elevator, or while sitting in the waiting room for a root canal procedure. Instead of a single-lever system, like what’s used to remove/secure AM4 Ryzen processors, Ryzen Threadripper is secured in place using a flip-up retaining mechanism that is secured with three screws.
Once the screws are removed, the mechanism flips up, after which you will need to remove a clear plastic insert that is left in for shipping. The Ryzen Threadripper process, which is mounted on an orange plastic cartridge, then slots into a retaining tray which is then lowered into the TR4 socket.
The video goes on to show the application of thermal paste and the massive air cooler that mounts to the motherboard using four spring-loaded screws. Overall, the installation is pretty straight-forward and so easy that even a caveman could do it.
As you already know, Ryzen Threadripper will be available in two SKUs at launch:
- Ryzen Threadripper 1920X: 12 Cores, 24 Threads, 3.5/4.0 GHz (Base Clock/Precision Boost)
- Ryzen Threadripper 1950X: 16 Cores, 32 Threads, 3.4/4.0 GHz (Base Clock/Precision Boost)
The Ryzen Threadripper 1920X will be priced at $799, whereas the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X will ring in at $999. This pricing puts the 1920X and 1950X at $400 and $700 cheaper respectively than their Intel Core i9-7920X (12-core) and Core i9-7960X (16-core) counterparts.
