HP To Take On Apple's Thin-Binge With 11mm, 13-inch MacBook Challenger
HP is due to reveal on April 5th what may be the thinnest notebook on the market. The HP Spectre is claimed to be 11mm- thick with a 13.3-inch display, and would beat Apple’s claims to having the slimmest products on the market. The HP Spectre will be announced in Versailles, France at a New York Times event.
This announcement comes on the heels of falling PC sales. Last year, 289 million PCs were sold worldwide, an 8% drop from 2014. Many people have turned to smartphones and tablets instead of PCs to fulfill their computer wants and needs.
HP’s fiscal numbers also reflect this decline. HP was able to increase its global shipments in 2015 from 18.4% to 19.4%, however, its overall unit sales in 2015 fell by 5.9% while their revenue dropped by 12% to $12.2 billion. Operating margins fell half a percentage point to 7.6 percent, compared with the national average operating margin of 10.7 percent. HP has responded to this decline with a plan to lay off around 3,000 of HP Inc.’s 50,000 employees.
But the company is unwilling to go down without a fight. HP split into two companies at the beginning of this past November: HP Inc. sells personal computers and printers, while Hewlett-Packard Enterprise sells commercial computer systems, software and tech services.

This split partly occurred because the company felt that it was not being as innovative as its competitors. Since the split, HP Inc. CEO Dion Weisler has increased research and development spending and plans to continue that trend. He hopes that the HP Spectre will be just one of many innovations that will be able to compete with corporations such as Apple.
