HTC Makes the One Mini Official
After all the rumors, speculation, and leaked info, HTC finally decided to make its One mini smartphone official. The handset maker announced the compact version of the One today, though it's only compact by Android standards. It has a 4.3-inch HD 720p display (341 pixels per inch), which is 0.3 inches larger than the iPhone 5's display, though reduced from the One's 4.7-inch 1080p display.
"Answering the call of consumers who want the best in mobile technology in a body that slips easily into a pocket, the HTC One mini heralds an exciting period for the company, as it builds on its platform of innovation leader," HTC said in a statement. "Distilling the iconic design of the HTC One, this new addition to the family combines a 4.3-inch display and powerful dual-core 1.4 GHz processor. It also runs the latest version of Android with HTC Sense, bringing HTC’s flagship mobile experience to style-seekers who demand premium looks and performance."
The One mini measures 5.2 inches by 2.5 inches by 0.36 inches, which isn't terribly smaller than the regular One, which measures 5.4 inches by 2.7 inches by 3.7 inches. Still, it's smaller by a faction, and weighs slightly less as well (4.3 ounces versus 5.1 ounces).
As for the hardware components, the One mini's 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor is a subdued version of the One's 1.7.GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU. HTC also chopped the RAM in half to 1GB. And while it boasts a 4MP "UltraPixel" camera, image stabilization is gone in the One mini.
One thing HTC didn't downgrade is the audio. The One mini still features dual front-facing stereo speakers with BoomSound (built-in amps, basically). Overall, it looks to be a decent handset for those who don't want a giant display, just don't expect a flagship experience from what boils down to last-generation hardware.
Look for the HTC One mini to be available in "select markets" starting in August, with a global rollout in September.
