HTC Vive VR Headset Commercial Launch Delayed Until April 2016
HTC had originally hoped to make its Vive virtual reality headset available to consumers right about now (by the end of 2015) but those plans have changed. Instead, it will make several thousand additional units available to developers in early 2016, followed by a commercial launch in April of next year, the company announced in a blog post today.
"We remain committed to delivering the HTC Vive to a broader group of content creators and partners, and remain focused on delivering the very best experience possible for a consumer release.," HTC said.
In the meantime, HTC will continue to work with developers, content creators, and companies to "create content that spans gaming, medical, education, and retail." HTC will also hold a developer conference in Beijing later this month and plans to launch a second generation Vive Developer Kit at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January.
HTC launched the original (and current) Vive back in March. It's a VR headset developed in partnership with Valve. Similar in style and function to Oculus Rift, the Vive headset features 360-degree head tracking, two 1200x1080 displays (one for each eyeball) with 90Hz refresh rates, a laser position sensor, accelerometer, and a gyroscope.
Early impressions of the Vive from around the web have been positive. Some even rate it higher than the experience Oculus Rift delivers, though both headsets are a work in progress.
