Huawei Mate X Folding Android Flagship Launches Next Month With Monster Price Tag
Despite those hiccups, Huawei announced today that the Mate X will go on sale next month; November 15th to be exact. At this point, the launch is unfortunately limited just to Huawei's home market of China.
“Our strategy is based on carriers’ 5G roll out in different regions," said a Huawei representative in a statement to The Verge. "So far, Huawei has made the Huawei Mate X available in the China market on November 15. A global launch plan is under review.”
The Mate X when it launches will be priced at 16,999, or $2,400. To put that in perspective, the competing Samsung Galaxy Fold -- which has already officially launched in the United States -- is priced at $1,980.
The Mate X differs from the Galaxy Fold primarily due to the fact the former's display is always exposed, even in the closed position. The Galaxy Fold, on the other hand, has a more traditional clamshell design where the display is protected when it is folded and it has a smaller cover display for interacting with the device in this configuration.
The Mate X has an 8-inch display with a resolution of 2480x2200. When folded, the display splits into two: a 6.6-inch main display (19.5:1 aspect ratio, 2480x1148) and a 6.4-inch (25:9 aspect ratio, 2480x892) for the rear. Powering the smartphone is a Kirin 980 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. There's also a 4500 mAh battery and a 5G wireless radio for connecting to next-generation networks.
