Huawei Mate X Folding Phone Is A Gorgeous Counter To Samsung's Galaxy Fold

We got out first glimpse at Huawei's Mate X on Friday when the smartphone was leaked via a banner advertisement. But now, we're getting our first real look at the smartphone in the flesh, and boy does it look good.

Samsung struck the first blow with its Galaxy Fold, but Huawei has arguably created a more desirable and stylish design with the Mate X. In its fully unfurled configuration, the Mate X takes on the form of an 8-inch tablet with minimal bezels all around. This gives you access to an 8:7 aspect ratio display with a 24820x2200 resolution.

However, when folded -- the Mate X folds so that its folding display is presented outwards instead of inward like the Galaxy Fold -- you have a 6.6-inch main display (19.5:1 aspect ratio, 2480x1148) and a 6.4-inch (25:9 aspect ratio, 2480x892) on the rear. When presented in tablet mode, the Mate X measures a respectable 5.4mm thick. When folded, the entire device doubles in thickness to 11mm.

As we mentioned in our previous article on the leak, the Mate X has a noticeable "spine" on one side that serves as a nice grip when holding the device in tablet mode, and includes a power button that integrates a fingerprint sensor. This spine also houses a push-button latching system for the folding display, three cameras and an LED flash. When the display is folded, the panel lays flush with this spine.

Inside, Huawei has incorporated its latest and greatest silicon including a 7nm Kirin 980 octa-core processor (8GB RAM, 512GB internal storage) and the company's own 7nm Balong 5000 5G modem. There are two battery cells, which combine for 4500 mAh, and Huawei says that its 55W SuperCharge technology will boost you to an 85 percent charge within 30 mins. The Mate X is also a dual-SIM device for the world travelers out there.

All-in-all, the Mate X looks like a valiant effort in the budding folding smartphone market and is something that we'd definitely like to get in our hands to thoroughly test. If there's one downside to this gorgeous piece of hardware, it's that it will be priced at €2,299, or roughly $2,600 when it launches in mid-2019.
