iDevices Suddenly Gain Access to Cloud Drive

When Amazon.com first unveiled its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player service, iDevices were left out. Attempting to play music from your Cloud Drive with an iDevice's browser simply wouldn't work. That's changed, all of a sudden, and quietly.

If you visit Amazon’s Cloud Player through the Safari web browser on an iDevice, it will now work. You’ll still get an error message (as shown below) warning you that your browser is unsupported, but if you ignore that, all will be good.

Go into the Cloud Drive in your account, find an appropriate song, and viola: music. It works as you might expect on iOS, even pausing the playback for a push notification or incoming call.

So who made the change and when? After all, since Cloud Drive and Cloud Player were rolled out, Apple has released both iOS 4.3.2 and iOS 4.3.3. Well, the changes weren't made on Apple's side.

How do we know that? We can attest to the fact that it is possible to use an iDevice with iOS 4.3.1, which was available at the time of the Cloud Drive / Cloud Player launch ... and failed at playing music in the Safari browser ... successfully with Cloud Drive, now.

It's obviously not as smooth as using the Android Amazon MP3 app, which includes Cloud Player built-in, but it will work well enough to keep folks who already uploaded all their iTunes music to Cloud Drive satisfied ... at least until Apple unveils its own iCloud service.
