Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer Is A Groovy Trip Down Nostalgia Lane

Planet Earth will once again find itself under siege from aliens, only this time around Captain Steven Hiller won't be around to save the day. However, there will be some familiar faces. Though Will Smith won't be returning to reprise his role as Hiller in Independence Day: Resurgence, scientist David Levinson, played by Jeff Goldblum, looks to once again have a major role.

The folks at 20th Century Fox released the first trailer for the second Independence Day, and in it we learn that mankind has been using alien technology to strengthen the planet and build up a better defense against future attacks. But as Levinson notes in ominous fashion, "it won't be enough." Uh oh.

Independence Day: Resurgence

"We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale," the trailer's YouTube description reads. "Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

So, where's Hiller when all this mess goes down for a second time? Fox reveals on "The War of 1996," a website that ties in with the upcoming flick, that Hiller was killed in 2007 while piloting the first test of an alien hybrid fighter, the victim of an unfortunate and unknown malfunction. Bummer.

Bill Pullman returns as President Whitmore, and there are some new faces, including Liam Hemsworth from The Hunger Games.

Independence Day: Resurgence is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
