Intel Acquires Navigation Chip Business From ST-Ericsson, Sharpening Focus On Mobile
It’s no secret that Intel doesn’t exactly have the same batting average in the mobile market as it does on the PC side, but the company is working towards changing that. To that end, the company purchased the satellite navigation chip business unit of ST-Ericsson, according to AllThingsD.
ST-Ericsson is a joint venture between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson, and the sale of the unit couldn’t come at a better time; AllThingsD reports that ST-Ericsson had an operating loss of $158 million in Q1 2013.

The acquisition will no doubt help Intel bolster its mobile portfolio, but in any case it’s notable because it’s one of the first actions of new Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, who has been sitting in the big chair for less than two weeks. If Krzanich can muster even a fraction of the success in the mobile market that former CEO Paul Otellini presided over on the PC side, Intel is going to continue to enjoy many more years in the black.
