Intel Buys Infineon's Wireless Unit For $1.4 Billion; Plans To Integrate Into Notebooks And Smartphones
It was a deal rumored to go down a few days ago, and now that a week has
begun fresh, Intel and Infineon are
officially tying the knot. Infineon
isn't a name that's unheard of, but many in the consumer space are
probably unaware of what kind of technology they build
behind-the-scenes. They're probably best known for their memory
endeavors, but Intel's more interested in their Wireless Solutions
Business. Really interested, in fact.
Interested enough to spend $1.4 billion in order to buy it, with the deal expected to close in Q1 of 2011. The WLS sale gives Infineon the cash to expand position in markets for automotive, industry and security technologies, while giving Intel potentially more. The company is expected to operate as a "standalone business" rather than folding underneath an existing Intel umbrella, and interestingly, Intel has already made clear that they are committed to serving WLS' existing customers, including support for ARM-based platforms. Yeah, the rival ARM -- that ARM.
Why would Intel be interested in paying so much for a wireless company you've never heard of? Intel's already invested heavily in Wi-Fi and WiMAX, and this purchase will reportedly allow them to "accelerate LTE." The newly acquired technology will be used in Core 2010-based laptops, Atom-based devices (smartphones, tablets and netbooks included) and it will align with the company's 'Computing' strategy.
It sounds to us that Infineon has quite a bit of IP in the LTE field, and rather than falling behind and developing their own, Intel's buying what's already out there in order to either compete or side with numerous carriers around the globe. This could lead to LTE-infused notebooks and phones from Intel, and with respect to Moorsetown phones, having LTE built close to the chip may push Intel's smartphone solutions ahead of Qualcomm, ARM, etc. The most telling quote from the release is here: "Through this effort, Intel will pair WLS' best-in-class cellular technology with its core strengths to enable the delivery of low-power, Intel-based platforms that combine its applications processor with an expanded portfolio of wireless options -- bringing together Intel's leadership in Wi-Fi and WiMAX with WLS' leadership in 2G and 3G, and a combined path to accelerate 4G LTE."
That's as close as either company comes to really saying what Intel plans to do with WLS, but we like the vibes we get from reading between those lines.

Neubiberg, Germany and Santa Clara, Calif., Aug. 30, 2010, CEST (Aug. 29, U.S. PDT) - Infineon Technologies AG and Intel Corporation have entered into a definitive agreement to transfer Infineon's Wireless Solutions (WLS) business to Intel in a cash transaction valued at approximately $1.4 billion.
WLS, a leading provider of cellular platforms to top tier global phone makers, will operate as a standalone business serving its existing customers. WLS will also contribute to Intel's strategy to make connected computing ubiquitous from smartphones to laptops to embedded computing.

WLS today holds leading positions in the field of wireless mobility and cellular platforms for smart phones and ultra-low-cost, entry phones. WLS provides baseband processors, radio-frequency transceivers, power management integrated circuits (ICs), additional connectivity features, single-chip solutions as well as the corresponding system software. This helps to enable the smooth transmission of voice and high-speed data from the backbone of the telecommunication network to the end user's device. With annual revenue of Euro 917 million, WLS was approximately 30 percent of Infineon's total annual revenue of Euro 3.03 billion in the past financial year.
The board of directors of Intel and the supervisory board and the management board of Infineon have approved the transaction. It is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011, subject to certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions specified in the definitive agreement.
