Intel Coffee Lake S 8-Core Processor Leaks Into 3DMark Database With Z390 Motherboard

Competition tends to bring out the best in people, and for the engineers at Intel, that means responding to AMD's 8-core Ryzen processors with 8-core variants of its own chips for mainstream consumers. And make no mistake, they are coming. Further evidence of this can be seen in Futuremark's 3DMark database, where one of Intel's 8-core Coffee Lake-S processors made an appearance.

The database is only partially filled in, so there are certain details we do not have yet. For example, the listing does not mention the boost clock, amount of cache, or TDP. However, it does indicate that Hyper Threading is supported, as it shows there is 1 physical processor, 8 cores, and 16 logical processors. That translates into 8 physical CPU cores and 16 threads to throw at workloads.


According to the entry, the unnamed Coffee Lake-S chip has a 2.2GHz base clock, assuming 3DMark is not misreading the metric (which is possible). That is rather slow in the grand scheme of things, though the unknown boost clock is of greater importance when it comes to muscling through heavy tasks. That said, based on this entry alone (and an assumption that it's accurate), it appears Intel is sacrificing a bit of clockspeed for more physical cores, a not unusual approach in processor design.

The leak also suggest a new motherboard that is presumed to be based on Intel's upcoming Z390 chipset. It's listed in the database entry as "Intel Corporation CoffeeLake S82 UDIMM RVP," which is likely an engineering sample. The new chipset has shown up in previous leaks, with a ship date listed for the second half of 2018. It's not clear Intel will only support its upcoming 8-core processors in Z390 motherboards, or if they will also work in Z370 motherboards with a BIOS update.
