Intel Core i7-1065G7 10nm Ice Lake CPU Shows Big Performance Gains In Leaked Benchmarks

Intel Ice Lake Die Shot
Intel and AMD have been at war with one another for several years, in the CPU performance and benchmarking space, though only recently have things become interesting. AMD's Zen architecture, now on its third generation (Zen 2), has made AMD a formidable opponent at all three performance tiers—entry-level, mid-range, and high-end. Has Intel conceded the crown?

That's a loaded question, and the answer really depends on a variety of factors, including which particular processor and market segment are being examined. And of course there are future products in the pipeline. Interestingly enough, another set of benchmarks for Intel's unreleased Core i7-1065G7 has leaked, and it bodes well for Ice Lake, the next foundational architecture that Intel is introducing into the PC client ecosystem.

The Core i7-1065G7 is a quad-core system-on-chip (SoC) for laptops and 2-in-1 devices. It is based on Intel's Ice Lake-U architecture and combines four physical Sunny Cove CPU cores and eight threads clocked at 1.3GHz to 3.9GHz (single-core boost) or 3.5GHz (all-cores boost) with integrated Gen11 graphics.

For a brief period, benchmark results for the Core i7-1065G7 appeared in the PassMark database. It was compared against an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor. Have a look...

The database entry has been wiped, but not before Google could cache the entry, as shown above. We see the Core i7-1065G7 besting AMD's Ryzen 5 3500U. AMD's chip also boasts four physical cores and eight threads, and is clocked at 2.1GHz to 3.7GHz. It uses Vega 8 graphics. However, note that it's based on the company's 12-nanometer Zen+ architecture (Picasso), and not its newest 7-nanometer Zen 3 architecture. Intel's chip is also working with a higher boost clock at 3.9GHz.

Even still, this is a solid showing for Ice Lake, and the Core i7-1065G7 specifically—the leaked benchmark score is around 22 percent higher than the Ryzen 5 3500U's score. Not too shabby.

As noted by WCCFTech, the Core i7-1065G7 also previously made an appearance on Geekbench, by way of a Dell XPS 13 7390 laptop...

Intel Core i7-1065G7

The single-core score is not far behind Intel's own Core i9-8950HK, which is a 6-core/12-thread unlocked mobile CPU. According to this entry, the Core i9-8950HK scores 5,367 in the-core portion of the test, and 21,859 in the multi-core portion. It's working with more cores and threads, so we expect the latter to be higher. The gap is not enormous, though.

On the integrated graphics side, an area where AMD has done rather well, Intel had previously provided several internal benchmarks showing its Gen11 graphics offering a nice performance bump. In short, Ice Lake on mobile looks intriguing so far, though of course we will have to wait for shipping products and perform hands-on benchmark runs to draw a definitive conclusion.
