Intel Prepping New CPUs for Ultrathin Laptops
Intel has a message for consumers, and that message is this: Thin is in. No, the Santa Clara chip maker isn't taking a dig at your recent weight gain, but is instead referring to its plans to introduce four new processors, all of which are intended to more heavily promote ultrathin laptops in the mainstream market.
"With an ultrathin laptop powered by Intel ultra-low voltage processors, consumers experience a unique balance of performance and power consumption that is incomparable in the market today – all in a slim, sleek package," said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the Mobile Platforms Group at Intel. "And at mainstream price points, Intel is proud to deliver ultrathin for all."
This new chips will ship under Intel's Core i3 and Core i5 nomenclature and power laptops that could be considered netbooks, if not for their larger LCD displays and expanded functionality, Intel said. You can expect these processors to be a little less powerful than regular voltage Core i3 and Core i5 parts, which are priced between $133 and $294, but offer more performance than the chip maker's Atom processor line.
According to Stephen Smith, vice president and director of PC client operations and enabling at Intel, the new processors will find homes in ultrathins in the second half of 2010.
