Intel-Based Surface Pro 3 A Possible Companion To Surface Mini Unveiling Next Week

This is a big month for mobile. In a couple of weeks, LG will unveil its G3 superphone at a press event in New York City, and before that, Microsoft will hold a press event of its own (also in NYC) to announce a new Surface device. Speculation has been that it will be a Surface Mini model to compete with the 7-inch and 8-inch tablets in the market place, but that might not be all Microsoft has on tap.

In a support article on Microsoft's website that has since been removed, it was mentioned that a new update for Windows 8.1 "adds support to the Surface Pro 3 camera." Before we read too much into this, it's possible the listing was just a typo. However, if that's the case, why not simply correct it rather than yank the document offline entirely? Seems suspicious to us.

There have also been reports of a new Intel-based Surface tablet debuting next to the upcoming Surface Mini slate, one that supposedly will include a power-optimized Haswell processor instead of an Atom chip. Haswell parts are found in the Surface 2 family, and Intel is getting ready to refresh its Haswell lineup.

In any event, we'll know soon enough -- the press event is scheduled to take place on May 20, 2014.
